Inclusive Excellence

I feel so privileged to come to a place where from the chancellor down to students on this campus, there is a strong desire to appreciate the diversity that's already here, whether it be leadership initiatives or whether it be student-led initiatives. There are offices that are working for all the communities. We have an African-American office. We have a Latino office. We have an LGBTQ office. The Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion has been doing a great job with this connecting with key people on campus and creating these spaces. There are so many opportunities for students to get involved way beyond the classroom. They are registered student organizations, everything from political to faith-based. It's given me the opportunity to get to know a lot of really amazing graduate students. But then also the faculty and staff, getting the chance to meet these important people who say, hey your experience as a student on campus really, really matters and we're going to make sure that you feel that and that we show that to you.

Me siento muy afortunado de llegar a un lugar donde, desde el rector hasta los estudiantes de este campus, existe un fuerte deseo de valorar la diversidad que ya está presente aquí, ya sea mediante iniciativas de los dirigentes o iniciativas impulsadas por los estudiantes. Hay oficinas que están trabajando para todos los grupos. Tenemos una oficina afroamericana. Tenemos una oficina latina. Tenemos una oficina LGBTQ. La Oficina de Diversidad, Equidad e Inclusión ha estado haciendo un excelente trabajo al contactar a personas importantes del campus y crear estos espacios. Hay muchas oportunidades para que los estudiantes participen mucho más allá del salón de clases. Son organizaciones estudiantiles registradas, de índole política hasta religiosa. Esto me ha dado la oportunidad de conocer a muchos estudiantes de posgrado realmente increíbles. Pero también el cuerpo docente y el personal tienen la oportunidad de conocer a estas personas importantes que piensan: "¡Oye!, tu experiencia como estudiante en el campus es muy importante, y nos aseguraremos de que lo sientas y te lo demostraremos".
